The Largest Pool in Southern Hemisphere
A man by the name of Alex Elliot purchased the park land in 1959 for $1500 in today's currency. Elliot was in the market for a water-based tourist attraction. After the purchase, the ambitious construction of the largest swimming pool began.
The pool was ready for the public for the Christmas of 1959. However it was officially opened in 1960. No doubt the local dignitaries weren't available during Christmas. Joan Webster sourced a good quality colour photo of the pool in its hey-day for her book on Helidon history.
Of course a new business venture needed new signs. The last photo shows the Helidon Spa business sign from 1960. The spa pool proved to be very popular.
Although the pool was filled in after many years of service, remnants of the pool's concrete edges can be seen in that area of the grounds.
